General Social Survey on Science and Technology Personnel in China, 2008
“The General Survey of Science and Technology Personnel in China” is funded by Chinese Association of Science and Technology (CAST) and conducted by Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development (CASTED). In the survey, the “science and technology personnel” is defined as those who have systematic knowledge of nature science, and whose work is related to the research, popularization, communication, application and management of science and technology. In terms of occupation, the survey covered five categories, namely the researchers, engineers, agricultural technicians, doctors and nurses, and teachers of nature science. The main aim of this survey is provide a general description of the living condition, working condition, performance, training, cooperation and communication, and attitude of science and technology personnel in China. The survey used multi-stage sampling method. In the first stage, 209 research institutes, universities, hospitals, enterprises and other organisations are randomly sampled. In the second stage, 150 S&T personnel are randomly selected within each organisation. The questionnaires were sent to sampled organisation and then distributed to sampled person, who filled the questionnaires and sent them back. The field work was conducted during April to July in 2008. A total number of 32100 questionnaires were sent, with 30078 of them re-collected. The response rate is 93.7%.
 

 

Survey on the Public Image of Science and Technology Personnel
“The Survey on the Public Image of Science and Technology Personnel” is a follow-up survey funded by Chinese Association of Science and Technology (CAST) and conducted by Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development (CASTED). The first-round survey was conducted in 2007 and resulted in a same titled book, and the second round survey is going to be conducted in 2011. In this survey, urban and rural residents in 6 cities (Beijing, Quanzhou, Jingzhou, Zhengzhou, Lanzhou and Chengdu) will be sampled as respondents, and their knowledge, opinion and attitude to the image and performance of Chinese science and technology personnel will be asked by using a structured questionnaire. The aim of this survey is to provide a brief description of the public image of Chinese Science and Technology Personnel and to monitor its change. Factors influencing this image will also will explored.
