Abstract: Based on the second national economic census data, this article analyses the spatial 

distribution features of production and R&D activities of energy industry through benchmarking 

and location commercial. We discovered that Chinas energy industry producing activities mainly 

concentrate in big energy reserve provinces and big energy demand provinces. These provinces 

distribute in eastern and middle of China, but the R&D scale and strength decline toward west. 

Basing on production and R&D features of all of the places, China can be divided into five zones, 

which are strong R&D and big energy produce provinces, strong R&D but small energy produce 

provinces, big production and big R&D provinces, big production but small R&D provinces, and small

 production and small R&D provinces. The falling behind provinces should improve their regional 

industry innovation ability according to their own features.
